Why I built this: After killing too many plants from overwatering (and a few from underwatering), I realized I needed a better system than "water when it looks dry." This calculator combines everything I've learned about plant watering into one simple tool. It's saved me from countless plant emergencies.
Forget watering on a set schedule — every plant, pot, and environment is different. This calculator considers your specific conditions to tell you approximately how often you should check your plant's soil.

How the Calculator Works
This tool estimates watering frequency based on several key factors:
- Plant type: Succulents need infrequent watering; ferns need consistent moisture
- Pot size: Larger pots hold more soil and dry more slowly
- Season: Plants use more water in summer, less in winter
- Light: More light = faster water use
- Humidity: Dry air increases water loss through leaves
- Soil: Fast-draining mixes dry faster; moisture-retaining mixes hold water longer
Important reminder: These are estimates, not guarantees. Always use the finger test before watering — stick your finger 2 inches into the soil to check actual moisture. My calculator gets me in the ballpark; the finger test confirms the timing.
The Golden Rule
No calculator or schedule can replace checking your plant's soil. Environmental conditions vary, and even two plants of the same species in the same room can dry at different rates. Check the soil, not the calendar.
